Personal Statement  

  I love being a school counselor and am very honored to be a Tillery Traveler.  We can because we think we can!  At Tillery we practice kindness and bucket filling.
  The cornerstone of our comprehensive guidance program at Tillery Elementary, is measured by research-based, data-driven practices which are used to measure the effectiveness of our program.  Data has become the driving force of much of our guidance curriculum.  As an advocate of the profession, I adhere to our agreed-upon professional standards in order to create a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate program of support for all students where decisions are framed by equity, opportunities for success, and access for all students. 

As a school counselor, I teach classroom lessons, work with students in small groups, provide individual counseling, consult with teachers and staff, distribute snack-packs, organize and participate in family nights, serve as an RTI (Response To Intervention) member, coordinator of on-site counseling services, mentor coordinator, and sponsor of a variety of student programs.
   When working with students, some of the topics that are addressed include the following:  pro-social skills, communication skills, friendship, problem solving, organization, effective study/test-taking skills, career awareness, anger management, conflict resolution, bullying, grief, divorce, cultural diversity, safety health/wellness, and digital citizenship.


Experience and Training       

   I’ve been teaching since 1983.  Initially, I spent ten years teaching grades (K-12) as a Special Education Teacher and Educational Therapist in Houston, Texas.  In 1993, I moved to Rogers and helped open Mathias Elementary where I served as a Professional School Counselor for seven years.  I transitioned to Lingle Middle School in 2001, taught mid-level literacy for seven years, and earned a Reading Specialist degree in 2004.  I transferred to Tillery in 2008 as the School Counselor and completed additional coursework in the area of Autism.  In 2015, I completed CDT Certification as a Dyslexia Therapist and am currently completing an Ed.S in Clinical Mental Health from Harding University.

Role of the School Counselor

 "The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision making, communication and life skills, as well as character values.  It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes towards school, self, peers, social groups, and family. Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children's lives. Early identification and intervention of children's academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. Then knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.  

Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development, and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow."
