In Kindergarten, we use the CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) method of instruction. This is an inquiry based learning for my students. We prompt them with a question posed in a story format and encourage them to use any strategy that helps to get them to the correct solution. The intent is for the students not to memorize the standard algorithms that we learned as kids, but for them to develop a foundation of fluent number sense and problem solving. The students in turn learn from each other as the role of teacher is shared.
